Chapter 3
King Solomon's Mines
The novel begins with Allan Quatermain explaining his reasons for writing the narrative, recounting his meeting with Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good aboard a ship, where they discuss the legend of King Solomon's Mines and the disappearance of Sir Henry's brother, George Curtis. They form an expedition, joined by the Zulu Umbopa, and set out into the African interior.
Chapter 4
I Meet Sir Henry Curtis
Allan Quatermain, a seasoned hunter and trader, begins his narrative by explaining his reasons for writing this history. He recounts his chance meeting with Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good aboard the ship Dunkeld, where Sir Henry reveals that he is searching for his lost brother, Neville, who disappeared on a journey into the African interior.
Chapter 5
II: The Legend of Solomon’s Mines
Allan Quatermain recounts the legend of Solomon's Mines to Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good, explaining how he first heard of the fabled diamond mines from a hunter named Evans and later from the dying Portuguese explorer José Silvestre. He reveals that Sir Henry's brother, George Curtis, was last seen heading toward the Suliman Mountains. Sir Henry proposes a well-funded expedition to find his brother and the mines, offering Quatermain generous terms. Quatermain hesitates, citing the danger and his responsibility to his son, but agrees to consider the offer.
