## Who they are

Kent belongs to the old order of sworn service: he speaks truth to power even when it costs him his lands and his name. Banished for defending Cordelia, he reinvents himself as the rough-spoken servant Caius and follows Lear into the storm, absorbing insults and even the stocks rather than desert his master. His stubborn fidelity becomes the play's measuring stick for loyalty, making every other character's self-interest look small by comparison.
