Chapter 1
Act I

Chapter 2
Scene I
King Lear divides his kingdom, disowns Cordelia for her honest refusal to flatter him, and banishes Kent for defending her. The King of France marries Cordelia despite her dowryless state, while Goneril and Regan privately plot to curb their father's remaining authority.
Chapter 3
Scene II
Edmund, the illegitimate son of Gloucester, begins his scheme to usurp his legitimate brother Edgar. He forges a letter from Edgar plotting against their father and manipulates Gloucester into believing Edgar is treacherous. Edmund then warns Edgar to flee, feigning concern, and revels in his cunning plan.
Chapter 4
Scene III
Goneril, angered by Lear's behavior and the riotous conduct of his knights, instructs her steward Oswald to treat the king and his followers with cold negligence, planning to confront Lear and coordinate with Regan to diminish his remaining authority.
Chapter 5
Scene IV
Lear hires the disguised Kent as a servant and confronts Goneril about her disrespect and reduction of his retinue. He curses her with sterility and storms off to seek Regan, while Goneril plots with Oswald to further undermine him.
