Chapter 2
Scene I
King John receives the French ambassador Chatillon, who delivers King Philip's claim that Arthur Plantagenet is the rightful heir to the English throne. John rejects the claim and prepares for war. Meanwhile, a land dispute between the Faulconbridge brothers is brought before the king. Philip, the elder brother, is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Richard the Lionheart. Queen Elinor recognizes Richard's traits in Philip and offers him a place in her service. John knights him as Sir Richard Plantagenet. After the court departs, Philip's mother confirms that King Richard is his father.

Chapter 4
Scene I
Before the gates of Angiers, King Philip of France and Austria ally with young Arthur and Constance to press Arthur's claim to the English throne. King John arrives with his forces, including Queen Elinor, Blanch, and the Bastard. The citizens of Angiers refuse to declare for either king until a clear victor emerges. The Bastard proposes a temporary alliance to attack the city, but a citizen suggests a marriage between Lewis the Dauphin and Lady Blanch to unite the rivals peacefully.
