## Snapshot

A man of many reputations — clay-souled, piratical, gifted — whose shifting epithets suggest a figure as slippery as he is consequential.

## Who they are

Wang Ho moves through the narrative under a swarm of aliases, each one hinting at a different facet of his character and conduct. The very variety of his names — the piratical Ho, the gifted Ho, the clay-souled Wang Ho — implies a man whose loyalties and talents resist easy summary. He matters because the tale keeps returning to him, as though no account of these events can be complete without reckoning with what he has done.
