> Tsae - Che in Kai Lung’s Golden Hours by Ernest Bramah.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Che, Tsae - che

**First appearance:** 0022-the-story-of-yuen-yan-of-the-barber-chou-hu-and-his-wife-tsae-che

## Snapshot

Tsae-che, wife of Chou-hu, whose place in the storyteller's world is bound up with a household and a marriage that shape what tales get told.

## Who they are

Tsae-che belongs to the domestic world that Kai Lung's wandering trade keeps at arm's length, a wife whose standing depends on Chou-hu and the obligations that come with him. Her position places her where hospitality, duty, and the appetites of a household press against the storyteller's need for a receptive audience and a full collecting bowl. Even at the edges of the early narrative, she represents the settled life Kai Lung passes through, and the kind of listener whose favor or displeasure can decide whether a tale earns its reward.
