## Snapshot

The Chief Examiner whose scrutiny of Kai Lung's tales turns a wandering storyteller's improvisations into a matter of official life and death.

## Who they are

Thang-li presides over the examinations and audiences where Kai Lung's fate is weighed, a figure of institutional authority before whom every polished phrase must justify itself. His judgments carry the weight of the Empire, yet he is not merely a censor; he takes genuine interest in the craft set before him, which makes his verdicts both more dangerous and more fair. In the early arc he embodies the peril that gives Kai Lung's storytelling its stakes, since a tale poorly told is not merely unrewarded but fatal.
