> Lao Ting in Kai Lung’s Golden Hours by Ernest Bramah.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Ting, Lao

**First appearance:** 0001-kai-lung-s-golden-hours

## Snapshot

A venerable figure whose dignity and adherence to the Usages make him both an obstacle and a measure of propriety in Kai Lung's world.

## Who they are

Lao Ting embodies the weight of custom and seniority, a man for whom dignity is not a preference but a law. When Chang Tao defies the Usages by standing on one foot, Lao Ting's voice prudently withdraws itself even as his mouth continues to open and close. His presence in the narrative marks the boundary between what is permitted and what is dared, and his reactions gauge the cost of every transgression.
