Kai Lung travels from Loo-chow toward Yu-ping, spreading his mat wherever a crowd might gather and reward his imagined tales. His elaborate courtesy and quick invention conceal a man perpetually one misstep from a painful death, yet he meets each threat with a story framed to fit the moment. His gift for narrative becomes the engine of the book, as the tales he tells to survive open into the lives of everyone around him.
