# Hwa - mei — Kai Lung’s Golden Hours character guide

> Hwa - mei in Kai Lung’s Golden Hours by Ernest Bramah.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Amiable Hwa - Mei

**First appearance:** 0015-vi-the-high-minded-strategy-of-the-amiable-hwa-mei

## Snapshot

The Amiable Hwa-mei, a poised maiden beneath a wild fig-tree whose gentle questions about storytelling craft conceal a mind already measuring the man before her.

## Who they are

Hwa-mei waits in the shadow of a wild fig-tree on the road from Loo-chow, one of two maidens prepared for any emergency, and alone among them chooses to remain when Kai Lung rises with elaborate bows. She draws him out with an encouraging smile, calling his trade dignified and nearly kin to the Sages who compiled The Books, yet her interest in which stories win approval hints at purposes beyond idle curiosity. Her amiable manner makes her the first audience Kai Lung must win, and the first to test whether his boast of knowing all stories can survive contact with a listener who listens closely.
