# Hien Nan — Kai Lung’s Golden Hours character guide

> Hien Nan in Kai Lung’s Golden Hours by Ernest Bramah.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hien, the degraded Hien, honourable Hien, gracious Hien

**First appearance:** 0001-kai-lung-s-golden-hours

## Snapshot

A figure whose honor and degradation are so intertwined that his name is spoken with both respect and contempt in the same breath.

## Who they are

Hien Nan is addressed variously as honourable and as degraded, a contradiction that defines him more sharply than any single title could. Something in his conduct has earned him both praise and censure, and the tale probes that divide rather than resolving it. His standing — precarious, contested, morally ambiguous — makes him a mirror for the story's larger preoccupation with reputation and its costs.
