## Snapshot

A recurring presence in Kai Lung's journeys, Cheng Lin belongs to the crowded cast of officials, travellers, and hangers-on who surround the storyteller's path.

## Who they are

Cheng Lin appears across several of the book's arcs, one of the many named figures whose paths cross Kai Lung's in wood, hall, and court. His role is bound up with the intricate social machinery of obligation and suspicion that the storyteller must navigate. He matters because the tale's comedy and suspense depend on such supporting figures, each with private motives, who turn a simple recital into a contest of wits.
