Adventure and Imagination

William and the Outlaws transform mundane settings into thrilling adventures (e.g., pirate games, mountaineering), using imagination to escape boredom and assert agency in a restrictive world.

William transforms ordinary objects into exotic exhibits, imagining a China rat, a wild cat, and a Russian bear.

Adventure and Imagination is one of the patterns Just William by Richmal Crompton returns to. The chapter notes above are from this edition’s companions — open those chapters to see how the book stages the idea rather than treating the theme as a slogan.
