# Queen Dolores — Jurgen character guide

> Queen Dolores in Jurgen by James Branch Cabell.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dolores, Queen Dolores of Philistia, Queen of Philistia

**First appearance:** 0035-xxxi-the-fall-of-pseudopolis

## Snapshot

The wise and pragmatic ruler of Philistia, she meets Jurgen's romantic posturing with dry skepticism and a cool, unimpressed eye.

## Who they are

Dolores governs Philistia with the level head of a monarch who has seen too much to be swayed by fine speeches or heroic airs. Where Jurgen drifts on fancy, she insists on the practical, and her refusal to be dazzled exposes the gap between his self-image and his conduct. Her presence anchors the middle stretch of the journey, testing whether Jurgen's ideals can survive contact with a ruler who has no patience for them.
