# Wampus Smale — Jibby Jones character guide > Wampus Smale in Jibby Jones by Ellis Parker Butler. **Role:** major **Also known as:** Wampus **First appearance:** 0000-i-oliver-parmenter-jones ## Snapshot Hot-headed and impatient, Wampus would rather swing a pick at the dead pine than listen to Jibby's strange talk about green sand and trained noses. ## Who they are Wampus is the counterweight to Jibby's patient scheming — a boy who trusts muscle and momentum over hints and half-sentences. When Jibby wanders off to collect sand, Wampus calls it nonsense and vows to dig up the treasure himself, dragging Tad and Skippy along with him. His refusal to slow down is what turns a promising dig into a rout of bumblebees and yelps, and his friction with Jibby keeps the group's loyalties shifting through the early hunt. ## Relationships ### [Jibby Jones](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/jibby_jones) _friendship_ Jibby and Wampus are close friends and frequent companions on adventures, with Wampus often serving as a loyal sidekick. ### [Oscar Smale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/oscar_smale) _family_ Oscar and Wampus are brothers, sharing a close sibling bond and often adventuring together. ### [Skippy Root](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/skippy_root) _friendship_ Skippy Root and Wampus Smale are friends and often part of the same adventure group. ### [Tad Willing](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/tad_willing) _friendship_ Tad Willing and Wampus Smale are friends and frequent co-adventurers with Jibby. ### [Jibby Jones](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/jibby_jones) _friendship_ Jibby and Wampus are close friends and frequent companions on adventures, with Wampus often serving as a loyal sidekick. ### [Jibby Jones](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/jibby_jones) _friendship_ Jibby and Wampus are close friends and frequent companions on adventures, with Wampus often serving as a loyal sidekick. ### [Oscar Smale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/oscar_smale) _family_ Oscar and Wampus are brothers, sharing a close sibling bond and often adventuring together. ### [Tad Willing](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/tad_willing) _friendship_ Tad Willing and Wampus Smale are friends and frequent co-adventurers with Jibby. ### [Tad Willing](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/tad_willing) _friendship_ Tad Willing and Wampus Smale are friends and frequent co-adventurers with Jibby. ### [Skippy Root](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/skippy_root) _friendship_ Skippy Root and Wampus Smale are friends and often part of the same adventure group. ### [Oscar Smale](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/oscar_smale) _family_ Oscar and Wampus are brothers, sharing a close sibling bond and often adventuring together. ### [Skippy Root](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/characters/skippy_root) _friendship_ Skippy Root and Wampus Smale are friends and often part of the same adventure group. ## In the story ### [I: Oliver Parmenter Jones](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/jibby_jones_se/chapters/i-oliver-parmenter-jones) One of the Riverbank boys;
