## Snapshot

Wampus's generous uncle, whose annual birthday fishing prize—a jointed rod with a five-dollar reel—sets every boy in town scheming to out-fish the unbeatable Wampus.

## Who they are

Uncle Oscar Smale is the well-liked grown-up whose birthday tradition turns a lazy summer into a contest, dangling a prize so fine the boys ache to win it even knowing Wampus always does. He's the kind of man the kids try for simply because he'd feel bad if they didn't, which says everything about how they regard him. His prize quietly raises the stakes on every riverbank scheme and Jibby Jones's strange bee-reading know-how.
