# Jibby Jones — Jibby Jones character guide

> Jibby Jones in Jibby Jones by Ellis Parker Butler.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Jibby, Jones, Old Jibby

**First appearance:** 0000-i-oliver-parmenter-jones

## Snapshot

A nearsighted boy with an outsized nose and an even bigger brain, Jibby turns sniffing, deduction, and misdirection into tools for hunting buried pirate treasure.

## Who they are

Jibby is the odd one out among the island boys — bespectacled, deliberate, and given to cryptic remarks that make his friends uneasy. While Wampus and the others swing picks at a dead pine, Jibby quietly studies green sand and fish scales, hinting he can train his nose to do what other noses cannot. His habit of talking apparent nonsense that later proves to be sense is exactly what makes him the story's engine: the treasure hunt only becomes a real hunt once Jibby starts thinking.
