# Miss Jahrman — Jenny character guide

> Miss Jahrman in Jenny by Sigrid Undset.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** a Miss Jahrman

**First appearance:** 0000-part-i-i

## Snapshot

The Jahrman sisters' mother, watchful of reputations and proprieties, represents the Norwegian respectability Jenny has traveled south to escape.

## Who they are

Miss Jahrman appears at the edges of the Rome scenes and in the family's Norwegian world, concerned with how her daughters are seen and what they owe to convention. Her judgments press on Jenny from a distance, making the freedom of the artist's life feel precarious. She is the quiet counterweight to everything Jenny is trying to become.
