Ideas that structure Jeeves Stories by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Servitude
The stories explore the rigid British class system through the master-servant relationship between Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, where Jeeves's superior intellect and competence often subvert traditional class hierarchies, and characters like the pageboy Harold are acutely aware…
Love and Marriage
Romantic entanglements drive many plots, with characters like Bingo Little repeatedly falling in love, facing obstacles from disapproving relatives or rivals, and relying on Jeeves's schemes to win over their beloveds, often treating marriage as a comedic negotiation rather th…
Family and Obligation
Aunt Agatha and other domineering relatives impose their will on Bertie and his friends, forcing them into unwanted engagements, errands, or social duties, highlighting the tension between personal freedom and familial expectations.
Intelligence and Incompetence
Bertie and his upper-class peers are portrayed as well-meaning but intellectually negligible, while Jeeves consistently demonstrates superior wisdom and problem-solving skills, reversing the expected roles of master and servant.
Deception and Identity
Characters frequently adopt false identities, impersonate others, or concoct elaborate lies to escape predicaments, such as Bertie impersonating a Cambridge student or Freddie kidnapping a child to fake a rescue, with Jeeves often orchestrating these deceptions.
Money and Dependence
Financial reliance on wealthy relatives or allowances is a recurring theme, with characters like Bingo Little and Corky dependent on uncles or aunts for income, and schemes often aimed at securing or maintaining financial support.
Comedy of Manners
The stories satirize the rituals and absurdities of upper-class Edwardian society, including country house visits, village fairs, fashion choices (like spats and cummerbunds), and the elaborate social codes that govern behavior.
Friendship and Loyalty
Bertie repeatedly comes to the aid of his friends, such as Bingo Little and Freddie Bullivant, despite their frequent blunders, demonstrating a steadfast loyalty that underpins the comic chaos and drives the collaborative problem-solving with Jeeves.
