Suffering and Resilience
The book portrays the protagonist's endurance through personal loss, poverty, creative blocks, and emotional turmoil, ultimately finding renewal through art, compassion, and a connection to the simple lives of ordinary people.

Rolland critiques bourgeois hypocrisy, materialism, and the corruption of art by commerce, while also depicting the dignity of humble lives and the isolation of intellectuals from the masses.
The Role of Art and the Artist
The novel examines art as a vital, moral force that must remain true to life and emotion, rejecting sterile formalism, dilettantism, and the commodification of creativity in modern society.
Generational Conflict and Change
The story highlights the clash between old and new values, as Christophe rebels against his father's and grandfather's conventionality, and later observes the restless energy and idealism of the younger generation, like Georges Jeannin.
Humanity and Compassion
A recurring theme is the recognition of shared suffering and the need for kindness, as Christophe moves from fierce individualism to a profound empathy for all living beings, including animals and the downtrodden.
