# Otto Diener — Jean-Christophe character guide

> Otto Diener in Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Otto, Diener, Young Otto

**First appearance:** 0009-ii-otto

## Snapshot

A pink-cheeked, over-dressed young man who idolizes Christophe from afar and becomes his first real friend on a Rhine steamboat.

## Who they are

Otto Diener is a well-off, eager boy who has watched Christophe at concerts and longs to be near him, offering shy historical facts and picking up a fallen hat with obsequious care. His admiration flatters Christophe even as it slightly irritates him, and their awkward, mutual courtship of friendship marks Christophe's first taste of being understood by a peer. Through Otto, the isolated young musician discovers that affection can come from outside his family, a fragile opening in his guarded world.
