# Melchior Krafft — Jean-Christophe character guide

> Melchior Krafft in Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Melchior, old Krafft

**First appearance:** 0003-part-i-dawn

## Snapshot

Christophe's father, a once-capable court musician whose drinking and rages turn the family home into a place of dread and dwindling money.

## Who they are

Melchior descends by degrees from respected Kapellmeister to a man whose fits of madness swallow both his reason and the household's last coins, leaving Louisa to bear the shame. His loud, doleful laughter after nights of excess wounds her more than his sullen rancor. The shadow of his father's collapse haunts Christophe's own fear of his violent inheritance.
