> Louisa Krafft in Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Louisa, poor Louisa, Poor old Louisa

**First appearance:** 0003-part-i-dawn

## Snapshot

Christophe's humble, loving mother, whose small domestic certainties and unshakable devotion anchor her son through poverty, disgrace, and his first steps into the world.

## Who they are

Louisa holds the Krafft household together while her husband Melchior drinks and rages, and she answers for her son's future with a quiet assumption of authority that he cannot overturn. When a liveried servant brings Frau von Kerich's invitation, Louisa simply tells Christophe he will go, and his fury cannot undo her word. Her steady, unglamorous love is the moral ground beneath his whole turbulent life.
