## Who they are

Gottfried drifts in and out of the Krafft household, a shabby itinerant whose humility masks a deep, unpretentious love of music and of life. He takes young Christophe on walks, shares the songs of peasants and beggars, and gently mocks the boy's growing vanity about his talent. His death—quiet, almost unnoticed—rocks Christophe more than any grand tragedy, and his example of art rooted in ordinary human kindness becomes a moral compass the composer carries for the rest of his life.
