# Antoinette Jeannin — Jean-Christophe character guide

> Antoinette Jeannin in Jean-Christophe by Romain Rolland.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Henrietta Hollard, Antoinette, the three Antoinette, Brave little Antoinette

**First appearance:** 0024-part-vi-antoinette

## Snapshot

Olivier's elder sister, rooted in an old provincial French family, whose quiet self-sacrifice for her brother's future gives the novel one of its purest portraits of devotion.

## Who they are

The Jeannins have clung to the same damp, monotonous corner of France for centuries, bound to the soil by a feeling they cannot name or escape. Antoinette carries that inherited stillness into a life of renunciation, pouring her hopes into Olivier's education and career. Her hidden sacrifices, made without expectation of return, quietly underwrite the intellectual life her brother will later bring to Paris.
