## Who they are

Timmy Durrant moves through the novel as Jacob's Cambridge companion and Clara's brother, at ease on a ten-ton yacht where he lifts the poker, sings hymns, and lets half-sentences do the work of arguments. His banter with Jacob — Masham's aunts, the Duke of Wellington, the gentleman question — reveals a mind that prefers wit to conclusion, and a temperament that treats metaphysics as a joke worth having. He matters because his easy, sunburnt world of sailing and clever talk is exactly the world Jacob drifts through, half-belonging to, before other lives intervene.
