# The Value of Knowledge and Science in Invaders from the Infinite

> Theme guide for Invaders from the Infinite by John W. Campbell.

Scientific discovery is portrayed as the key to survival and progress, with characters relying on physics, mental sciences, and ancient records to develop defenses, while ignorance or suppression of knowledge leads to vulnerability.

## Where it surfaces

- [III: A Quarter of a Million Light Years](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/iii-a-quarter-of-a-million-light-years): The Ortolians use mental science and thought amplification to gather intelligence, while Earth's scientific advancements are key to defense.
- [IV: The First Move](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/iv-the-first-move): Arcot and Morey's detailed explanations of the ship's principles underscore the importance of scientific understanding in overcoming challenges.
- [World 3769–37,478,326,894,6, Talso](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/vii-world-3769-37-478-326-894-6-talso): Earth's advanced scientific knowledge and power generation capabilities are crucial to overcoming the Talsonians' technological limitations.
- [IX: The Irresistible and the Immovable](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/ix-the-irresistible-and-the-immovable): Arcot's rapid understanding and improvement of the Talsonian technology highlight the importance of scientific knowledge and cross-species collaboration.
- [XII: Sirius](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/xii-sirius): Arcot uses scientific deduction to understand the attractive ray, turning ancient technology into a practical weapon.
- [Intergalactic Space](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/xiv-intergalactic-space): The chapter focuses on the immense labor of developing new scientific theories (artificial matter, space-energy fields) and the use of time retardation for research.
- [Power of Mind](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/xvii-power-of-mind): The chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding the mathematics and physics behind the new power, and the scientists' role in advancing knowledge.
- [XXVI: Man, Creator and Destroyer](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/invaders_from_the_infinite_se/chapters/xxvi-man-creator-and-destroyer): The weapon is based on deep understanding of quantum mechanics and matter, and Morey's new device shows science enabling creation as well as destruction.
