Chapter 1
Dedication to B. W. King-Hall
P. G. Wodehouse dedicates this book to his friend B. W. King-Hall, reflecting on their eighteen-year friendship and his superstition about book dedications, but decides to take a chance on this one.
Chapter 2
Indiscretions of Archie
Archie Moffam, a young man of limited means but boundless optimism, finds himself entangled in a series of comedic misadventures involving his new marriage to Lucille Brewster, his attempts to secure employment, and his interactions with a colorful cast of characters including his wealthy father-in-law, Mr. Daniel Brewster, and the eccentric artist Reggie van Tuyl.
Chapter 3
Distressing Scene in a Hotel
Archie Moffam, an Englishman recently arrived in New York seeking employment, complains to the manager of the Hotel Cosmopolis about a dripping tap and unpolished shoes. The manager, Daniel Brewster, takes offense at Archie's criticism of his hotel and demands he vacate the room. Archie, who had already planned to leave for a house-party in Miami, settles his bill and departs, vowing never to return.
Chapter 4
A Shock for Mr. Brewster
Mr. Daniel Brewster enjoys a peaceful lunch with Professor Binstead in his luxurious suite at the Cosmopolis, discussing art and his recent successful real estate deal. His tranquility is shattered when he receives a telegram from his daughter Lucille announcing she is returning to New York with 'darling Archie'—revealing she has secretly married an Englishman while in Miami. Brewster, who dislikes Englishmen, is horrified and recalls a recent incident where an English guest disparaged his hotel.
Chapter 5
III: Mr. Brewster Delivers Sentence
Archie and Lucille return from Miami and plan to gently break the news of their marriage to Mr. Brewster. Lucille first meets with her father alone, painting Archie in an idealized light. However, when Mr. Brewster meets Archie, he recognizes him as the man who complained about the hotel earlier. Furious, Mr. Brewster confronts Archie, who admits he has no job or money. Mr. Brewster reluctantly agrees to support them but only by providing a suite and meals at his hotel, with no cash allowance.
