Concepts
Ideas that structure Indian Summer by William Dean Howells — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Age and Youth
The novel explores the tension between middle age and youth, particularly through Colville's sense of being too old for romance and the attempts of younger characters like Imogene to restore his lost youth, while characters like Mr. Waters argue for the richness of life at forty.
Love and Marriage
Romantic relationships are central, including Colville's past jilting, his evolving feelings for Mrs. Bowen, and Imogene's idealistic but misguided attachment to him, highlighting the complexities of love, sacrifice, and societal expectations.
Disillusionment and Regret
Colville experiences profound disappointment with his past life in Des Vaches and his failed love affair, leading to a search for meaning and a recurring sense of regret about his choices and the passage of time.
American Expatriate Experience
The book examines the lives of Americans in Florence, their nostalgia for home, their adaptation to European culture, and the contrast between American energy and the old-world beauty and decay of Italy.
Social Convention and Propriety
Characters navigate the rules of society, especially in the context of Carnival and the veglione, where Mrs. Bowen's cautiousness clashes with Colville's more relaxed attitudes, revealing tensions between personal desire and social expectations.
Art and Culture
Florence's art, architecture, and history serve as a backdrop, influencing characters' reflections on life and beauty, with discussions of painters, churches, and the role of art in shaping personal and collective identity.
Self-Deception and Illusion
Characters often cling to illusions about themselves and others, such as Imogene's romanticized view of Colville or Colville's own self-pity, which are gradually challenged by reality and honest introspection.
