> Princess Labam in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Princess Labam, Labam, The Princess Labam

**First appearance:** 0004-how-the-raja-s-son-won-the-princess-labam

## Snapshot

A fairy princess glimpsed through lotus petals and an ivory box, whose distant beauty sends a prince and his friend across a world of robbers and tricks.

## Who they are

Labam is the object of a quest before she is ever a presence — a fairy of the fairies whose face the prince sees only for a moment before she hides it. Her coded gestures, the lotus petals and the ivory box, are the only clues to her name and city, and they turn her into a riddle the vizier's son must decode. She matters because she is the prize that justifies every danger the travellers face, and the reason the story keeps moving toward the Ivory City.
