# Prince Majnun — Indian Fairy Tales character guide

> Prince Majnun in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** The Prince, Majnun

**First appearance:** 0010-loving-laili

## Snapshot

A prince who hears his own name called across a hunting field, falls in love with the stranger calling it, and loses her before he ever learns who she is.

## Who they are

Majnun is the son of King Dantal, hunting in the Phalana country with his companion Husain Mahamat when a girl on horseback rides behind them, repeating his name. He turns, sees Laili, and she falls in love instantly, but he leaves the kingdom that same night, before her father can propose the match. His hasty departure sets off the long separation that defines the tale, and his later refusal to marry anyone else, even after being told Laili is dead, shows a stubbornness that mirrors her own.
