# Laili — Indian Fairy Tales character guide

> Laili in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Poor Laili

**First appearance:** 0010-loving-laili

## Snapshot

A princess who abandons her father's kingdom to wander twelve years through jungles, possessed by one name: Majnun, the husband Khuda promised her.

## Who they are

Laili is the daughter of Munsuk Raja of the Phalana country, driven half mad by an angel's command that she marry Prince Majnun and no one else. When he vanishes before she can meet him, she leaves home and wanders from jungle to jungle for twelve years, repeating his name until a fakir directs her to the Rohu fish that can carry her across the Bhagirathi. Her devotion is absolute and reckless, and it sets the whole story in motion: she loses her beauty, her home, and her human form in pursuit of a man she has glimpsed only once.
