# Katar — Indian Fairy Tales character guide

> Katar in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0006-punchkin

## Snapshot

A prince hidden inside the king's horse Katar, raised in secret by a groom while four wicked queens scheme against him.

## Who they are

Katar is both the name of the king's horse and the prince concealed within it, a child the groom discovers and secretly cherishes, letting him play about the stable. When the groom betrays the secret to the four wicked Queens, they feign injury and demand the horse be shot, forcing the king to order his own hidden son destroyed. His perilous double life — beloved by a groom, hunted by queens — drives the story's early tension and sets up his role in rescuing his sister Balna.
