## Who they are

Harisarman is a poor Brahman who claims to know things he does not, and when a stolen treasure is found through a coincidence he cannot explain, the king rewards him with villages and honors. The real thief, a maid named Jihva, overhears him cursing his own tongue and mistakes it for accusation, confessing everything. His tension is that every new success tightens the trap: the minister Devajnanin suspects him, and the king keeps testing him with fresh tricks, so his fortune depends entirely on luck holding out.
