# Gangazara — Indian Fairy Tales character guide

> Gangazara in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** the generous Gangazara

**First appearance:** 0002-indian-fairy-tales

## Snapshot

A generous figure whose kindness anchors one of the collection's tales, embodying the Buddhist ideal of selfless giving rewarded against the odds.

## Who they are

Gangazara belongs to the moral world of the Jataka-derived stories, where generosity is tested and repaid. His defining trait is open-handedness, and the tale built around him asks what happens when a good man's generosity meets a world that does not return it in kind. He matters because he gives the collection its ethical center: a reminder that these fairy tales are also teaching stories, and that kindness is a plot device with consequences.
