# Balna — Indian Fairy Tales character guide

> Balna in Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0006-punchkin

## Snapshot

The seventh and most beautiful of seven princesses, abandoned in a jungle by a father who cannot defy his murderous new queen.

## Who they are

Balna is the youngest of seven sisters whose father, Raja Sarkap, leaves them sleeping in the jungle rather than kill them to satisfy his wife's demand for their blood. She marries the youngest of seven princely brothers and bears the only heir of that generation, making her son the family's hope. When her husband and his six brothers vanish one by one on a hunt, Balna's world narrows to grief and waiting — the hinge on which the tale's rescue adventure turns.
