First appearance: A Home Found

As a supporting figure in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Mrs. Bruce is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.

Mrs. Bruce enters Linda's life in the free North as an employer whose decency stands in sharp contrast to the Flints, yet whose help Linda cannot accept without ambivalence. When a new master threatens to seize Linda's children, Mrs. Bruce arranges escape and eventually purchases Linda's freedom, a gift that lands on Linda as both deliverance and a fresh wound. Her steady, unglamorous persistence forces the book's hardest question: what does freedom mean when it still arrives as a bill of sale.
