# Mr. Sands — Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl character guide > Mr. Sands in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Linda Brent. **Role:** supporting **First appearance:** 0010-vii-the-lover ## Snapshot The white lawyer whose attentions offer Linda a fragile hope of protection, and whose children she bears in secret. ## Who they are Mr. Sands moves through Linda's world as a sympathetic white man whose affection complicates rather than shields her, since no bond with a slaveholder can truly free a woman owned by another. He fathers her children and later purchases them, a gesture that mingles tenderness with the same property logic that enslaves her. His presence forces Linda into agonizing choices about love, motherhood, and the limits of what any white man's kindness can undo. ## Relationships ### [William](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/william) _professional_ Mr. Sands is William's enslaver, a relationship of ownership and control. ### [Mrs. Flint](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/mrs_flint) _social_ Mr. Sands and Mrs. Flint are acquaintances within the slaveholding society, with Mrs. Flint suspicious of his involvement with Linda. ### [Grandmother](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/grandmother) _social_ Grandmother and Mr. Sands have a tense, transactional relationship as she negotiates for her family's welfare with him. ### [Linda Brent](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/linda_brent) _romantic_ Linda has a coerced romantic relationship with Mr. Sands, who fathers her children but fails to protect her. ### [Linda Brent](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/linda_brent) _romantic_ Linda has a coerced romantic relationship with Mr. Sands, who fathers her children but fails to protect her. ### [William](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/william) _professional_ Mr. Sands is William's enslaver, a relationship of ownership and control. ### [Mrs. Flint](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/mrs_flint) _social_ Mr. Sands and Mrs. Flint are acquaintances within the slaveholding society, with Mrs. Flint suspicious of his involvement with Linda. ### [Mrs. Flint](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/mrs_flint) _social_ Mr. Sands and Mrs. Flint are acquaintances within the slaveholding society, with Mrs. Flint suspicious of his involvement with Linda. ## In the story ### [X: A Perilous Passage in the Slave Girl's Life](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/x-a-perilous-passage-in-the-slave-girl-s-life) A white unmarried gentleman who becomes Linda's lover; she hopes he will buy her and free her children. ### [XI: The New Tie to Life](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xi-the-new-tie-to-life) Promises to care for Linda's child and to buy her; treats the child kindly when he sees him. ### [Another Link to Life](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xiv-another-link-to-life) Mr. Sands is the father of Linda's children; his offer to give them his name is mentioned, but Linda dares not accept it while Dr. Flint lives. ### [XIX: The Children Sold](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xix-the-children-sold) Mr. Sands secretly arranges the purchase of William and the children through a slave trader, securing their freedom from Dr. Flint. ### [XXIV: The Candidate for Congress](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xxiv-the-candidate-for-congress) Mr. Sands is elected to Congress but initially hesitates to speak with Linda; he later promises to free their children. ### [Important Era in My Brother’s Life](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xxvi-important-era-in-my-brother-s-life) William's master; expresses disappointment but does not pursue William; claims he intended to free William in five years. ### [New Destination for the Children](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xxvii-new-destination-for-the-children) Acknowledges his children but fails to fully protect them; proposes sending Ellen north while claiming they are free. ### [The Meeting of Mother and Daughter](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xxxii-the-meeting-of-mother-and-daughter) Has given Ellen to Mrs. Hobbs's eldest daughter and has not kept his promise to emancipate the children. ### [The Confession](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/chapters/xxxix-the-confession) Mentioned as Ellen's father who neglected her during her five months in Washington. ## Links - HTML: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters/mr_sands - Book: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se - All characters: https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/incidents_in_the_life_of_a_slave_girl_se/characters
