## Who they are

Seen indistinctly among trees near the Brownville House, Brune speaks with rich, musical anger to a woman in gray, warning that she is powerless and that both will suffer. His eyes glitter bleakly in the moonlight, and when the hidden observer springs from shadow, the pair simply disappears. He matters because the next morning's new face at the breakfast table makes the reader doubt whether the encounter was real.
