He joins the Duncan's voyage alongside his sister Mary, and his reckless courage repeatedly puts him in danger — most memorably when he digs through packed earth with a stolen knife to reach the captives. His daring repays Lord Glenarvan's kindness at the risk of his own life, making him far more than a passenger. ## Relationships ### [Lord Glenarvan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lord_glenarvan) _friendship_ Glenarvan acts as a protective guardian and mentor to young Robert Grant, driven by a sense of duty and growing affection. ### [Jacques Paganel](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/jacques_paganel) _friendship_ Paganel becomes a playful and instructive friend to young Robert, often teaching him geography and sharing adventures. ### [Mary Grant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/mary_grant) _family_ Mary Grant is Robert's older sister, acting as a caring and protective maternal figure after their father's disappearance. ### [Lady Helena](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lady_helena) _friendship_ Lady Helena shows maternal warmth and care toward young Robert Grant, comforting him during the perilous journey. ### [Lord Glenarvan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lord_glenarvan) _friendship_ Glenarvan acts as a protective guardian and mentor to young Robert Grant, driven by a sense of duty and growing affection. ### [Jacques Paganel](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/jacques_paganel) _friendship_ Paganel becomes a playful and instructive friend to young Robert, often teaching him geography and sharing adventures. ### [Mary Grant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/mary_grant) _family_ Mary Grant is Robert's older sister, acting as a caring and protective maternal figure after their father's disappearance. ### [Jacques Paganel](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/jacques_paganel) _friendship_ Paganel becomes a playful and instructive friend to young Robert, often teaching him geography and sharing adventures. ### [Mary Grant](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/mary_grant) _family_ Mary Grant is Robert's older sister, acting as a caring and protective maternal figure after their father's disappearance. ### [Lady Helena](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lady_helena) _friendship_ Lady Helena shows maternal warmth and care toward young Robert Grant, comforting him during the perilous journey. ### [Lord Glenarvan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lord_glenarvan) _friendship_ Glenarvan acts as a protective guardian and mentor to young Robert Grant, driven by a sense of duty and growing affection. ### [Lady Helena](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/characters/lady_helena) _friendship_ Lady Helena shows maternal warmth and care toward young Robert Grant, comforting him during the perilous journey. ## In the story ### [The Three Documents](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/chapters/ii-the-three-documents) Not directly present but implied as part of Captain Grant's family that Lady Helena worries about. ### [III: The Captain's Children](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/chapters/iii-the-captain-s-children) Twelve-year-old brother of Mary, protective of his sister, deeply moved by the story of his father's shipwreck. ### [Lady Glenarvan's Proposal](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/chapters/iv-lady-glenarvan-s-proposal) Hears his sister's story with astonishment and expresses his determination to help. ### [The Departure of the Duncan](https://www.betterreads.dev/discover/in_search_of_the_castaways_se/chapters/v-the-departure-of-the-duncan) Eager to join the voyage, even willing to serve as cabin-boy;
