Chapter 1
I: The Shark
On July 26, 1864, the yacht Duncan, owned by Lord Glenarvan, encounters a large shark during a trial voyage. After a successful hunt, the shark is brought aboard and its stomach is examined, revealing a bottle containing damaged documents. Lord Glenarvan, Lady Helena, Major MacNabb, and Captain John Mangles carefully extract the papers, hoping they hold important information.
Chapter 2
The Three Documents
Lord Glenarvan and his companions examine three water-damaged documents found in a bottle, written in English, French, and German. By piecing together the fragments, they deduce that the brig Britannia of Glasgow, under Captain Grant, was wrecked on June 7, 1862, in the southern hemisphere, likely on the coast of Patagonia, and that the captain and two sailors were taken prisoner by cruel Indians. Glenarvan resolves to launch a rescue and sends a telegraph to the newspapers seeking information.
Chapter 3
III: The Captain's Children
Lady Helena receives Mary and Robert Grant at Malcolm Castle, learning they are the children of Captain Harry Grant, whose shipwreck was announced in a newspaper advertisement. She comforts them with the hope of rescue, explaining that Lord Glenarvan has taken the document to London to seek government support for an expedition.
Chapter 4
Lady Glenarvan's Proposal
Lady Helena learns the story of Mary and Robert Grant, whose father Captain Harry Grant has been missing for two years. Lord Glenarvan returns from London with the news that the government has refused to provide a vessel for a rescue mission. In response, Lady Helena proposes that they use their own yacht, the Duncan, to search for Captain Grant, a proposal that is met with enthusiasm by all.
Chapter 5
The Departure of the Duncan
Lady Helena's brave decision to join the rescue expedition for Captain Grant is met with enthusiasm. Lord Glenarvan orders the Duncan prepared for a long voyage to the South Seas. Captain Mangles oversees the provisioning and arming of the yacht, and the crew, all loyal Scots, eagerly prepare. Mary and Robert Grant are allowed to accompany the expedition. After a farewell service at Saint Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow, the Duncan departs on the night of August 24th, navigating the Clyde and reaching the open sea by morning.
