**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mme. de Villeparisis, de Villeparisis, Balbec

**First appearance:** 0010-part-i-place-names-the-place

## Snapshot

An elderly aristocrat whose salon blends genuine culture with careful social calculation, and whose Balbec connections quietly open doors for the narrator's first seaside summer.

## Who they are

Mme. de Villeparisis moves through the Faubourg Saint-Germain with the ease of a woman who has outlived most of her scandals and outmaneuvered most of her rivals. Her salon draws artists, diplomats, and provincial guests, though her Guermantes relatives treat her with a studied coolness that hints at old family wounds. For the narrator she becomes an early lesson in how aristocratic hospitality works — gracious on the surface, strategic underneath.
