# Bergotte — In Search of Lost Time character guide

> Bergotte in In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** young Bergotte, M. Bergotte, the true Bergotte

**First appearance:** 0004-combray

## Snapshot

A celebrated writer whose prose the narrator idolizes, and whose actual person proves disappointingly ordinary compared to the transcendent voice of his books.

## Who they are

Bergotte is the narrator's first great literary idol, a figure whose sentences seem to open a window onto a more beautiful reality. When the narrator finally meets him, the man's unremarkable appearance and halting conversation threaten to shatter the illusion, yet the encounter also teaches him that genius resides in the work, not the person. Bergotte's slow decline and eventual death become a meditation on the relationship between art, the body, and the persistence of a voice beyond its author.

## In the story

The narrator visits Bergotte, who dismisses a new writer and appears physically diminished, leading a vegetative life. He is a creature of habit, visiting the narrator's house daily.

Used as an example of a writer who benefits from associating with ordinary, false persons to gain insight.
