Concepts
Ideas that structure Huntingtower by John Buchan — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Adventure and Heroism
The book follows the unlikely hero Dickson McCunn, a retired provision merchant, who is drawn into a daring rescue mission involving a Russian princess, a poet, and a gang of street urchins, highlighting how ordinary people can rise to extraordinary courage.
Class and Social Mobility
Themes of class are explored through Dickson's humble origins and his unexpected kinship with the Nicol Jarvies, as well as the contrast between the Gorbals Die-Hards (working-class boys) and the aristocratic characters, showing that worth is not tied to social standing.
Loyalty and Friendship
Loyalty binds the diverse group—Dickson, Heritage, the Die-Hards, and Saskia—as they face danger together, with characters repeatedly risking their lives for one another, exemplified by the Die-Hards' steadfastness and the sworn oaths taken.
Good Versus Evil
The narrative pits a small band of principled defenders against a ruthless gang of Bolsheviks and criminals, led by the angel-faced villain Paul Abreskov, emphasizing a clear moral struggle where courage and righteousness triumph over corruption.
The Power of Youth and Innocence
The Gorbals Die-Hards, despite their rough upbringing and small stature, display resourcefulness, bravery, and a sense of honor that proves crucial, suggesting that youthful energy and moral clarity can overcome adult cynicism and evil.
Escape and Renewal
Dickson's walking holiday represents a personal escape from the routine of his former life, leading to self-discovery and a renewed sense of purpose, while the remote setting of Huntingtower offers a temporary refuge from the chaos of the outside world.
The Thin Crust of Civilization
The story underscores how easily law and order can break down, as Heritage notes that 'civilization anywhere is a very thin crust,' with the remote Scottish coast becoming a stage for piracy and violence that the police are too slow to prevent.
Romance and Sacrifice
John Heritage's devotion to Princess Saskia drives much of the plot, as he willingly endures injury and danger for her sake, while Saskia's own courage and refusal to abandon her allies highlight a romantic ideal of selfless love.
