Concepts
Ideas that structure Hudibras by Samuel Butler — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Religious Hypocrisy
The book satirizes the Puritan and Presbyterian factions of the English Civil War, exposing their self-serving piety, doctrinal absurdities, and use of religion as a pretext for violence and political ambition.
Political Corruption
Butler mocks the chaos and opportunism of revolutionary politics, depicting leaders who break oaths, manipulate laws, and pursue personal gain under the guise of public good or divine mandate.
Folly of Pedantry
The protagonist Hudibras and his squire Ralpho embody empty learning and false intellectualism, using jargon, logic-chopping, and pseudo-scholarship to justify foolish actions and absurd beliefs.
Love and Marriage as Warfare
Romantic and marital relationships are portrayed as cynical battles of wit and power, where courtship involves deceit, financial calculation, and strategic manipulation rather than genuine affection.
Cowardice and False Valor
The knightly ideal is subverted throughout the poem, as Hudibras and his opponents display bravado that masks incompetence, fear, and a tendency to flee or cheat rather than fight honorably.
Satire of Ideology
The poem attacks all rigid ideological systems—religious, political, or philosophical—showing how they lead to absurdity, conflict, and self-destruction, while their adherents remain blind to their own contradictions.
Human Vanity and Self-Deception
Characters consistently delude themselves about their own motives, abilities, and virtues, revealing a universal human tendency toward pride, rationalization, and the pursuit of reputation over truth.
