Ideas that structure How the Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Poverty and Inequality
The book exposes the vast chasm between the wealthy and the impoverished in New York City, detailing how the 'other half' lives in squalid tenements, struggles with starvation, and faces systemic neglect from the upper classes.
Tenement Life and Housing
Riis examines the genesis and evolution of tenement housing, highlighting overcrowding, lack of ventilation, dark bedrooms, and the physical and moral decay fostered by these slum conditions.
Immigration and Ethnicity
The narrative explores the experiences of various immigrant groups—Irish, German, Italian, Jewish, and Chinese—showing how they are crowded into distinct neighborhoods and subjected to unique forms of exploitation and prejudice.
Crime and Moral Degradation
Riis links the tenement environment to the rise of crime, gangs, street Arabs, and moral decay, arguing that poverty and squalor breed lawlessness and corrupt the young.
Child Suffering and Exploitation
The book highlights the plight of children in the slums—abandoned babies, homeless boys, child laborers, and victims of disease—portraying them as the most vulnerable casualties of urban poverty.
Public Health and Disease
Riis documents the deadly impact of unsanitary living conditions, including outbreaks of typhus, smallpox, and high infant mortality, and criticizes the inadequate public health response.
Alcoholism and the Saloon
The saloon is depicted as a pervasive and destructive force in tenement life, fostering addiction, political corruption, and crime while preying on the poor's misery.
Charity and Social Reform
Riis examines the role of charitable organizations, model tenement projects, and the need for systemic reform, arguing that material improvement must precede moral uplift.
Exploitation and Greed
The book condemns the greed of landlords, sweatshop owners, and corrupt politicians who profit from the suffering of the poor, calling it a 'Christian civilization' gone astray.
