# the Flounder — Household Tales character guide

> the Flounder in Household Tales by Jacob Grimm.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Flounder

**First appearance:** 0018-the-fisherman-and-his-wife

## Snapshot

A speaking fish in a sea that changes color with each wish, granting an ambitious wife's demands while her husband's heart grows heavier.

## Who they are

The Flounder is bound to answer when the fisherman calls, and the sea's shifting colors—green and yellow, then purple and dark-blue—register each request before it is spoken. He never argues or refuses; he simply grants, and the granting is the punishment. His calm compliance is what makes the wife's escalating demands so quietly terrifying, and the fisherman's dread of returning is the story's true barometer.
