## Who they are

Peter travels as the Lord's companion and purse-holder, giving Gambling Hansel three groschen for bread and then three more when the first are lost at cards. Where the Lord already knows everything, Peter is the one who grows exasperated, urging action when Hansel traps Death in a tree and halts all dying. His running alarm gives these tales their comic human counterweight to divine forbearance.
