# Maid Maleen — Household Tales character guide

> Maid Maleen in Household Tales by Jacob Grimm.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Maleen

**First appearance:** 0206-maid-maleen

## Snapshot

A princess walled up in a tower for seven years for loving the wrong man, who walks out of the dark still faithful to her prince.

## Who they are

Maleen defies her father for the sake of a suitor, and her punishment is a lightless imprisonment that would break most people. Her constancy is the point: she endures silence, hunger, and the collapse of everything she knew, and emerges still expecting to find her prince. The tale's early arc rests on whether such loyalty can survive the world's indifference, and Maleen's quiet stubbornness is the answer it keeps testing.
