# Briar-Rose — Household Tales character guide

> Briar-Rose in Household Tales by Jacob Grimm.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Briar-rose, Rose-red, Rose, The Rose

**First appearance:** 0054-briar-rose

## Snapshot

A princess who sleeps a hundred years behind a wall of thorns, waking only for a prince whose kindness to animals breaks the spell.

## Who they are

Briar-Rose is the center of a kingdom's long pause, a girl whose curse is not her fault and whose rescue depends on a stranger's goodness rather than her own deeds. The tale lingers on the still household, the ivory bed, the pearl-embroidered shoes, and the servants frozen mid-task, making the sleep feel less like rest than a held breath. Her awakening is the story's release, and the thorns outside are the world's way of asking who deserves to enter.
